Liam’s Bar Mitzvah

Liam’s Bar Mitzvah

I met Liam’s dad several years ago when we were both working as photographers for Yale’s rare book library. We became fast friends, and after many family dinners, their kid’s birthdays, and other social gatherings, I got to know his family pretty well.

On occasion, as I like to do, I photographed his family just for fun.

Fast forward a few years to a call I got from Liam’s mom. Though they moved to Michigan, she wanted to hire me to shoot Liam’s Bar Mitzvah because “you are the only one who has ever take a photo of Liam with a genuine smile on his face.”

Well, compliments get you everywhere, so I hopped on a plane for Detroit!

There were all kinds of family members there! Seeing all the varied family dynamics (and antics) was just priceless!

One of my favorite out takes was when Liam’s grandma smooshed his mom’s cheeks and said “No matter how old she gets, she’s still my cute widdle girl!!” Awesome!

After a party where they did the limbo, a conga line, and had a contest to make the best mummy by wrapping volunteers in toilet paper, it was all over.

Black and White Family Session

I’ve been eager to do an all black and white photo session recently, and lucky for me, these folks were all about it! I just feel like black and white images (most of the times, at least) allow folks to really look at the photos, to take in the expressions and the emotions without distractions. I’d love to do this again!

Trying to Keep Up!

Even when their parents asked their kids to sit still for a photo, they just couldn’t do it! It was awesome!! So many family sessions run the risk of being too posed, and that’s not how I or the kids roll! I LOVE letting them jump on each other, I love it when they can’t stop playing, and I LOVE IT when we’re going to take one “normal” family shot, and they take turns jumping up and ROARING at my camera! Awesome!!

Another AWESOME wedding at Bucksteep!!

Sometimes, the stars align. Every time I shoot a wedding or a family, I get better. It’s an amazing feeling, and I love knowing that I am providing folks with some awesome and beautiful memories! Lily and Gabe’s wedding was no different! In fact, it was just PERFECT in every way! The skies were just overcast enough to give me some awesome light while being nice enough that no one was worried about rain, the fall colors were bursting in the Berkshires, Lily and Gabe were totally willing to trust what I was doing with the photos (what an AWESOME feeling!!), their friends were stylish, a little silly, and just beaming with happiness for the bride and groom, and lastly, I was at Bucksteep! This is not only a great venue that I’ve shot at several times, but it’s where I got married, so it’s always a special place to go for me! I felt so lucky to be there in that moment with those folks… Wow. They were a fun and easy going couple, focused on having a party with family and friends, and it was a great one! I could not have asked for a better day, an awesomer couple, or a more perfect wedding! Too bad I don’t have any more weddings this year. :( Hey Lily and Gabe, feel like a second wedding this winter? :)

Sudbury Grist Mill

The Sudbury Grist Mill is one of those iconic places around here. It has been photographed a million times, and when we arrived for our family photo session there, the place was crawling with photographers and their clients (one was doing a high school senior photo session with some glittery attire, another was asking their couple to get close and kiss in what I assume was an engagement session, etc.).
It made me feel like everyone was on stage performing. I’ve never liked those types of shots, so I asked my folks to get away from everyone and go play by the lake where no one else was. It made all the difference. The family I was working with got a little more relaxed and the kids focused more on climbing on the rocks and getting rides from dad! That’s what I like to photograph, and that’s what I hope my clients hire me for!
